Ginseng Astragalus Chicken Soup is a wonderful home remedy for treating chronic lung weakness, digestion weakness, low blood pressure and excessive bleeding.

Both of ginseng and astragalus (Huang Qi) are tonics that have strong effects in “Qi (life force) generating”. Ginseng and astragalus are often used together in traditional Chinese medicine. Ginsing and Astragalus combination is one of classical tonic formulations. It promotes the production and circulation of Qi. According to the traditional medicine guidelines, ginseng combined with astragalus can strengthen the effects – greatly improve lung and heart functions.

Chicken can also increase ‘Qi’ and stimulate immune system. The combination of ginseng, astragalus and chicken is a very strong and powerful immune booster for a patient who has the symptoms of weak lung and short breath, weak pulse, cold limbs, weak digestion or fatigue, low blood pressure, and excessive bleeding.

How to Make Ginseng Astragalus Chicken Soup

Here is the recipe.

Ingredients:

– Chicken (3-4 pounds);
– Ginseng (20g);
– Astragalus (30g);
– Chinese red dates 6-10;
– Ginger (3 slices);
– Table salt (2 teaspoons or to the taste);
– Water (2 quarts cold water).

Preparations:

– Cut the chicken into 1-inch pieces;
– Put chicken, ginseng, astragalus, dates, ginger and salt into a large pot, add water;
– Cover the pot and bring to boil;
– Allow to simmer 1-2 hours on the stove.
– Eat a bowl, 1-2 times per day.

This soup is one of well known traditional home remedies in China. It is often used for treating weakness following childbirth, surgery, injury, excessive bleeding, or severe illness. You may also add dang gui (Angelica sinensis) to the recipe.

You can use either one alone to make a soup if you cannot find both ginseng and astragalus.
