Ma Po Tofu (Mapo Doufu) is a famous Chinese recipe from the Sichuan (Szechuan) province. It is said that this dish may be beneficial in relieving some symptoms of menopause, such as poor appetite, fatigue, feelings of irritability.

Here is how to make Ma Po Tofu:

Ingredients

– Tofu 1 lb (regular or soft, cut into 1/2-inch cubes)
– Corn oil (or peanut oil) 1 to 2 tablespoons
– Ground beef (or ground pork) 1/4 to 1/2 lb
– Garlic 4 cloves (finely minced)
– Fresh Ginger 3 slices (finely minced)
– Starch 1 tablespoon (dissolved in 2 tablespoons water)
– Dou Ban Jiang (or Japanese Miso) 1/2 tablespoon (or soy sauce 2 tablespoons)
– Sichuan-pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon (or according to your taste)
– Chili pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon (or according to your taste)
– Water 1/2 cup

Directions

– Heat a pan over high heat until hot and add corn oil, swirling to coat. Add ground beef, and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes.
– Add garlic, ginger, Dou Ban Jiang (or miso, or soy sauce), chili pepper, and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes.
– Add water, bring to a boil, simmer for 2-3 minutes.
– Add tofu, bring to a boil, stirring gently, simmer for 2 minutes.
– Add starch mixture, stirring gently.
– Turn off heat, and sprinkle with Sichuan-pepper powder
