Doctors and parents who had never trusted natural remedies were shocked when the FDA had completed its review of information about the safety of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines in infants and children under 2 years of age.
FDA recommends that these drugs not be used to treat infants and children under 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur. FDA’s recommendations made at the October 18â19, 2007. “FDA strongly supports the actions taken by many pharmaceutical manufacturers to voluntarily withdraw cough and cold medicines that were being sold for use in this age group”.
FDA warns that Even using these medicines for children older than age 2, “OTC cough and cold medicines do not treat the cause of the symptoms or shorten the length of time your child is sick. They only relieve symptoms and make your child feel more comfortable.”
These medicines, according to FDA’s warning, are not only almost useless, and also have “serious and potentially life-threatening side effects”.
Infants and children under 2 years of age are most sensitive to the effects of a drug than older children and adults. If a drug that is even non-effective to infants, then it is definitely non-effective to older children and adults. Adults are less sensitive to the side effects of a drug than children. If a drug that has potentially life-threatening side effects to infants, then it might have serious side effects to older children and adults, though the side effects might be not potentially life-threatening. This may explain why FDA warns that even using these drugs for older children, parents still should be very careful.
This is just, once again, a good example how embarrassing modern medical community and pharmaceutical industry can be when they always laugh at people who are using natural remedies.
Though modern medical science and pharmaceutical industry have developed many effective medicines, but they also have produced many drugs that are almost useless or have serious side effects.
It may be hard to compare modern medicines to natural remedies. But at least we can say that, modern medicines are not always, in every area (treating every disease), better than natural remedies.
At least in treating common colds and coughs, natural remedies that have been proven in thousands of years are more effective and have fewer side effects than the modern drugs that, produced and promoted by profit-driven companies, had proven “effective” only in short term (a few years or even a few months) clinical trials.
Instead of using what FDA warned to be non-effective over the counter drugs, many doctors have expressed their approvals over the warnings and reassure people that they are not missing out on effective natural remedies.
