According to TCM, areca catechu peel is slightly warm and pungent. It affects spleen, lungs, stomach, and intestines. This herb has a strong downwarding properties – it guides (leads, drives) Qi downward, thus it is often used to relieve stomach distention and chest tenderness caused by uprising qi. And areca catechu peel also is powerful in eliminating dampness and reducing swelling, TCM doctors often use it to treat edema, beriberi and dysuria.

Here is a classic Chinese herb formula, used for over one thousand years, for treating beriberi, abdominal distension, constipation and dysuria:betel-peel

Ingredients:

– Areca catechu peel (大腹皮) 50g
– Areca catechu nut (槟榔) 50g
– Saussurea costus (木香) 25g
– Akebia stem (木通) 100g
– Semen Pruni (郁李仁) 50g
– Morus alba root bark (桑白皮) 100g
– Semen Pharbitidis (牵牛子) 100g

Directions:

– Make the above herbs into a fine powder
– Each time, boil 12g powder, a slice of fresh ginger and a fistular onion stalk in a cup of water for 10 minutes
– Drink it, three times a day
