Madder (Rubia cordifolia, Manjistha, 茜草) is a herb that can be used to treat hemoptysis, hematemesis, nosebleed, hematuria, blood in stool, uterine bleeding, amenorrhea, postpartum stasis, bruises and rheumatism.

Madder root is used in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat blood disorders. According to TCM, madder has effects to cool blood, stop bleeding, help blood circulation, and remove blood stasis.

To treat hemoptysis, hematemesis, nosebleed, and hematuria, combine madder root with thistle, rhizoma imperatae, gardenia and peony root to cool the blood and stop bleeding.madder-for-hemoptysis

To treat amenorrhea and blood stasis, combine madder root with red peony, safflower, Chinese angelica.

You can also use it to make tincture for treating bruises and rheumatism.

The following are two Chinese formulas:

Formula 1 for amenorrhea and postpartum stasis:

– Madder root 50g
– Water 1 cup
– Boil it to make a decoction
– Add some wine (rice wine, or distilled alcoholic beverage)
– Drink it while warm

Formula 2 for nosebleed:

– Madder root 10g
– Argy wormwood leaves (Ai Ye) 10g
– Mume Fruit (Wu mei) 5g
– Boil them in 2 cups of water to make a decoction
– Drink it twice a day
