Blue Flag (Iris versicolor) is a native American remedy that is used to treat liver & hepatic diseases, constipation, acne, eczema, sores and bruises.

Blue flag root is traditionally used by native American tribes as a cathartic or purgative to treat constipation, and a liver stimulant to treat liver and hepatic diseases.

Blue flag has been used to detoxify the body. People believe that blue flag has blood cleansing abilities. It can reduce inflammation.

How to use blue flag

Today, blue flag is sold in forms of liquid extract, powder, solid extract and tincture. You may find it in a health food store. Follow the instructions of the products on how to use it.

Traditionally, to treat liver & hepatic diseases, and constipation, people use blue flag root to make a decoction or tea:

- Blue flag root powder 2-3 grams
- Water 1 cup
- Boil and simmer for 10 minutes
- Drink it, twice a day

To treat acne, eczema, sores and bruises, drink the blue flag decoction, and also use blue flag to make a poultice:

- Use dried flag root powder or fresh root to make a poultice
- Apply it to the affected area

The poultice has effects to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and inhibit infection.

Please note, blue flag may cause severe irritation. Pregnant women should avoid it. Before taking blue flag, you should consult an herbalist or physician, especially when using it internally.
