Suffering from Osteoarthritis (OA)? It is said that Chondroitin is one of the natural dietary supplements that can help treat osteoarthritis.
Chondroitin sulfate is a mucopolysaccharide which is a major component found in cartilage, tendons and ligaments, where it is bound to proteins such as collagen and elastin. Chondroitin sulfate is an important structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression. It contributes to strength, flexibility and shock absorption for our joints. Chondroitin helps to keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (particularly water) into the connective tissue. It may also block enzymes that break down cartilage, and it provides the building blocks for the body to produce new cartilage.
Scientific research suggest that chondroitin is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a type of arthritis characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage. It reduces OA pain, improves functional status of people with hip or knee OA, reduces joint swelling and stiffness, and provides relief from OA symptoms for up to 3 months after treatment is stopped. Chondroitin is regulated in the United States as a dietary supplement by the Food and Drug Administration. Along with glucosamine, it has become a widely used dietary supplement for treatment of osteoarthritis and joint pains.
Chondroitin is commonly sold in capsules or tablets. It is often combined with glucosamine and MSM. How much you should take? Chondroitin sulfate alone: 1200 mg daily given as 400 mg three times a day. Glucosamine plus chondroitin sulfate combined: same doses-1500 mg and 1200 mg daily.
Please note:
1. Chondroitin is not recommended for children and pregnant women, since it has not been studied for safety in these groups.
2. When used at the recommended daily dosage, chondroitin is safe and relatively free of side effects to most people. But some people may experience mild stomach upset.
