Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder that slowly devastates mental functioning, including memory, emotion, logical thought and language, and eventually impacts physical functioning. The disease is named for a German doctor Dr. Alois Alzheimer who discovered this illness.
There are many home remedies (or kitchen remedies) that can prevent and help treat Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).
Citrus. Citrus fruits, including orange, lemon and grapefruit, are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that is believed to help protect brain nerves. Drinking orange juice daily is a way to increase your vitamin C intake.
Soy. Soy products include soy sauce, bean curd (tofu) and soy milk. Studies suggest that isoflavones found in soy protein may protect people from Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). You can take 20 to 25 grams soy protein a day. Try soy milk, tofu and soy sauce.
Fish. Fish is a good “brain food” because fish is high in fatty acids, which are important for healthy brain function. Eat fish twice a week is an effective home remedy for Alzheimer’s disease. You can eat salmon, sardines, lake trout, anchovies, and light tuna. You can also take fish oil fatty acids supplement.
Carrots. Carrots contains beta-carotene, and is a rich source of vitamin A. Studies have shown that, without sufficient vitamin A, nerve health and even memory can suffer. Eating carrots at least twice a week will help improve the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).
Curry. Curry a good preventive spice. Studies suggest that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric might prevent Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Curry is a main spice in Indian food. This might explain why India has one of the lowest rates of AD in the world. Curcumin inhibits formation of Abeta oligomers and fibrils, binds plaques and reduces amyloid in vivo. According to a study in University of California Los Angeles 2004, The phenolic yellow curry pigment curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities and can suppress oxidative damage, inflammation, cognitive deficits, and amyloid accumulation. The study suggests that low dose curcumin effectively prevents fibril and oligomer formation, supporting the rationale for curcumin use in clinical trials preventing or treating Alzheimer’s disease. You can eat food with curry, or buy curcumin supplements in health food supplement store.
