Chyawanprash is one of Ayurvedic anti aging and longevity remedies. The first Chyawanprash formula was documented in two thousand years ago.
Chyawanprash is an ancient herbal remedy that has bee used for centuries by Ayurveda to balance doshas of body, promote digestion, purify blood, eliminate toxins and slow down the aging process. Chyawanprash is one of the oldest longevity tonics in India. It is an adaptogenic that provides excellent anti-aging and anti-stress properties to strengthen body’s natural defenses.
The Chyawanprash formula is originally documented in Charaka Samhita, one of the three major classics of Ayurveda. Charak Samhita was written by Charak in the 4th century B.C. It claims that chyawanprash is the best and most effective of all herbal tonics available to mankind. According to Charaka Samhita, taking chyawanprash will “promote intellect, memory, luster, immunity to diseases, longevity, strength of sense organs, sexual excitement, great stimulation of digestive, clarity of complexion and downward movement of vayu [which means healthy elimination].”
A Chyawanprash Formula
What is the formula? The following is a Chyawanprash formula (Dabur India Ltd):
– Fresh Amla fruit (Indian gooseberry)
– Sugar
– Honey
– Ghee
– Long pepper (Piper longum)
– Sesame oil
– Giant potato (Ipomoea mauritiana, or Kiribadu Ala)
– Cardamom
– Bamboo manna
– Indian kudzu
– Winter cherry (or Ashwaghanda)
– Asparagus
– Cinnamon bark
– Country mallow
– Wild black gram
– Wild green gram
– Galls
– Feather foll plant (or Bhumiamalaki)
– Raisins
– Irish root
– Chebulic myrobalan
– Round zedoary
– Nut grass
– Spreading hogweed (Boerhavia diffussa)
– Blue Egyptian water lily
– Malabar nut (Seed of Adhatoda vasica)
– Liquorice
– Tiger’s claw or Ice plant
– Sandalwood
– Clove
– Chinese cinnamon
– Indian Rose Chestnut
– Potassium sorbate
Please note, there is no “real” Chyavanprash formula. We can only say that there is the oldest version of the formula. In fact, Chyavanprash formula is given in ayurvedic texts like Ashtanga Hridayam, Charaka Samhita, Sarngadhara Samhita, etc. Today in India, different companies are making chyavanprash based on their own recipes. The number of herbs used in the formula varies.
