Prostatitis is the inflammation of prostate gland. Prostatitis is relatively common among men. Over 30% of men over 50 years of age suffer from prostate problems. Prostrate gland is a male gland situated at the base of the urinary bladder and around the starting of urethra. Prostatitis is caused by infection. There are four types of prostatitis:

Acute bacterial prostatitis;
Chronic bacterial prostatitis;
Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis;
Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis.

Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis is the most common type of prostatitis. The symptoms of this type of prostatitis is that patient normally feels urinary and genital pain from time to time.

There are many home and herbal remedies that can be used for the treatment of the prostatitis.

1. Pumpkin Seeds. Components in pumpkin seeds appear able to interrupt this triggering of prostate cell multiplication by testosterone and DHT, although the exact mechanism for this effect is still a matter of discussion. There are many components found in pumpkin seeds, including omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids and zinc. Studies found that men with higher amounts of carotenoids in their diet have less risk for prostate problems. Pumpkin seeds serve as a good source of zinc, and this may contribute to the role of pumpkin seeds in support of the prostate. Some scientists belive that pumpkin seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids that promote health of prostate glands, thereby reducing infection.

2. Saw Palmetto Extract. Saw Palmetto Extract is an extract of the fruit of Saw Palmetto, which has been used in Europe as an herbal treatment for enlarged prostates. Saw Palmetto is best know for its use with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but has also been used by men with prostatitis. Many patients state that they have had marked reduction in their urinary symptoms after taking Saw Palmetto.

3. Pygeum is a herb remedy in traditional African medicine. It is used to alleviate some of the discomfort caused by inflammation in patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). Pygeum extract, made of the bark of Prunus africana, is sold in the market the brand-names of Pygenil. The Natural Standard Research Collaboration states: Pygeum has been observed to moderately improve urinary symptoms associated with enlargement of the prostate gland or prostate inflammation. Numerous human studies report that pygeum significantly reduces urinary hesitancy, urinary frequency, the number of times patients need to wake up at night to urinate, and pain with urination in men who experience mild-to-moderate symptoms.
