When using herbal remedies to treat coughs, you should know the differece between two types of coughs.

There are two types of coughs

Dry cough: no sputum or liquid of any sort is evident.

Wet cough: a lot of liquid or sputum is ejected and such coughs are typically very productive. The exudates include mostly mucus.

How to treat dry cough

To treat dry cough, you should take something that can moisturize your lung and respiratory system. The following remedies can be used for dry cough:

Honey;
Pear;
Dates.

How to treat wet cough

To treat wet cough, you should take something that can remove the liquid or sputum from your lung and respiratory system. The following remedies can be used for wet cough:

Ginger;
Chilli;
Garlic;
Mint;
Onion;
Lemon.

The basic guideline is that: if the cough is “dry”, then moisturize the respiratory system for making it “wet”; and if the cough is “wet”, then evaporate excessive liquid from the respiratory system for making it “dry”. Spicy foods – chilli, garlic, ginger – can cause sweating (evaporate liquid from the body), so they are used to treat wet cough under some conditions.
