Crinis Carbonisatus (Carbonized Hair, Xue Yu Tan) is the cabonized human hair. It can be used to treat hematemesis, epistaxis (nosebleeds), hematuria, uterine bleeding, traumatic bleedings and blood stasis.
Crinis Carbonisatus is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). According to TCM, Xue Yu Tan has effective to stop bleeding and remove blood stasis. Studies have confirmed that crinis carbonisatus has hemostatic effects on rats. It also has antibacterial effects. The decoction of Xue Yu Tan shows strong inhibitory effect against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, paratyphi and Shigella flexneri.
In TCM, Carbonized Hair is often used to treat internal and external bleeding, and blood accumulation.
Traditional method to make xue yu tan:
– Wash the hair with soda water
– Rinse with water
– Dry it in the sun
– Put it in an iron pot, cover and seal with mud
– Heat it in a low flame to carbonize it
To treat internal bleedings:
– Use 15g Xue Yu Tan to make a decoction
– Or take 1.5g Xue Yu Tan powder
– 3 times a day
To treat Epistaxis (nosebleeds):
– Apply powder to the nostrils
To treat gum bleeding:
– Apply powder to the affected area
