Looking for cancer remedies? Scientific studies suggest that strawberry has anti-cancer effects that can help fight cancer, such as nasopharyngeal, lung, oral, esophageal, tonsil, larynx, colon and prostate cancers.

There are some studies that support the benefits of strawberries as cancer remedies. According to a report of The Wall Street Journal in 2011, researchers in Ohio State University found that freeze-dried strawberries slowed the growth of dysplastic, or precancerous. The study was aimed specifically at esophageal cancer, which is the third most common gastrointestinal cancer and the sixth most frequent cause of cancer death in the world, Dr. Chen said. About 16,000 new cases of esophageal cancer a year are diagnosed in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Chen’s team recruited 38 people in China who had mild-to-moderate dysplasia in the esophagus; 36 people completed the study. Biopsies of the esophagus were taken before and after the study. On average, patients were about 55 years old. The patients consumed 30 grams of freeze-dried strawberries dissolved in a glass of water twice daily for six months. Overall, the results showed 29 out of 36 participants experienced a decrease in histological grade of the precancerous lesion, or a slowing in the growth of the lesion during the study. The freeze-dried strawberries are about 10 times as concentrated as fresh, but Dr. Chen suggested people could still benefit from eating fresh strawberries on a daily basis.

Some studies suggest that, as one of cancer remedies, strawberry’s anti-cancer effects come from its antioxidant compounds. In 2008, researchers in University of California, Los Angeles, published their study on Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2008 – “Isolation and identification of strawberry phenolics with antioxidant and human cancer cell antiproliferative properties”. The study suggests that consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries, may have beneficial effects against cancer. Berries contain multiple phenolic compounds, which are thought to contribute to their biological properties. Strawberry crude extracts and purified compounds 1- 10 were evaluated for antioxidant and human cancer cell antiproliferative activities by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and luminescent ATP cell viability assays, respectively. Crude extracts (250 microg/mL) and pure compounds (100 microg/mL) inhibited the growth of human oral (CAL-27, KB), colon (HT29, HCT-116), and prostate (LNCaP, DU145) cancer cells with different sensitivities observed between cell lines. This study adds to the growing body of data supporting the bioactivities of berry fruit phenolics and their potential impact on human health.

Though the recent studies indicate potential of strawberries for cancer prevention, more studies are needed.

From the point of view of traditional medicine, it is not surprised that strawberries help fight cancers due to its effects to reduce overheat and fever in lungs, respiratory system, throat, and mouth, and the effects to relieve the disorders in digestive system.

Please note, as one of cancer remedies, strawberry might have some beneficial effects against cancer, but it cannot and should not substitute for medicine and professional treatment.
