Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan (Gurigumu-13, Safflower Liver-cleansing 13 Flavors Pill) is a Mongolian classical medicine used for treating liver diseases, hepatotoxicity, alcoholic liver, fatty liver, frequent urination, blood in urine, Sinusitis and eye diseases caused by blood heat syndrome.

Drugs and alcohol are two important causes of liver injury. Hepatotoxicity (hepatic toxicity) implies chemical-driven liver damage. This liver toxicity is a drug/alcohol induced or food poisoning liver injury, including alcoholic liver and fatty liver. Drugs account for 20-40% of all instances of fulminant hepatic failure. Alcohol-related cirrhosis is known to be underreported. However, about 44 percent of all deaths caused by cirrhosis in North America are reportedly alcohol related. Up to 100% of heavy drinkers show evidence of fatty liver, an estimated 10% – 35% develop alcoholic hepatitis, and 10% – 20% develop cirrhosis.

Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan (Gurigumu-13) is a cooling Mongolian medicine for liver cleansing and blood detoxification. It is said to be very effective for treating hepatitis, liver function decline and other related diseases (sinusitis, eye diseases).

Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan contains safflower. This herb is beneficial to liver health. According to a study published on Poultry Science May 1997, dietary safflower phospholipid reduces liver lipids in laying hens. The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary safflower phospholipids on performance and lipid metabolism of laying hens. The results suggest that dietary safflower phospholipids may be a valuable ingredient to layers for reducing liver triglycerides and serum cholesterol without any adverse effects.

Toosendan (Chuan Lian Zi) in Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan is designed for soothing liver and alleviating pain. Toosendan can relive the pain caused by liver disease. Toosendan clears liver fire with its bitter and cooling properties. It is especially good for relieving Qi stagnation syndrome with liver-heat.

Gardenia is another bitter and cooling herb in the formula. It cleans liver heat and is often used to treat liver and gall bladder diseases. According to a mice study, Gardenia contains genipin (an active constituent) that regulated inflammatory activity. Geniposide from Gardenia enhanced glutathione content in rat livers. Glutathione is an important immune system amino acid that helps determine modulation of immune response, including cytokine production.

Costus (Mu Xiang) in Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan is used for dispersing the stagnated liver Qi, activating vital energy circulation and alleviating pain.

Bezoar is the dried cow gallstone. As a traditional medicine, bezoar has cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. Its main effects are clearing away the heart-fire, eliminating phlegm, inducing resuscitation, cooling the liver, dispelling wind, and relieving internal heat or fever. Bezoar is often used for treating fever-induced coma, stroke, epilepsy seizures, cramp, mania, sore throat, mouth sores, and boils.

Honghua Qinggan Shisanwei Wan is made in China. Don’t be surprised. As you may not know that, approximately three times as many Mongols live in China as in the nation of Mongolia. There are much, much more traditional Mongolian hospitals, doctors and medical schools, and traditional Mongolian medicine producers in Inner Mongolia of China than in the nation of Mongolia.
