Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca, 益母草) is a herb that has been used to treat women’s disorders, such as dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, blood stasis, and lochia (postnatal bleeding).

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), motherwort has blood-moving effects and can be used to relieve dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation caused by blood stasis, and treat lochia (postnatal bleeding). The below are Chinese formulas using motherwort:

1. Motherwort and Egg

– Eggs 2
– Motherwort 30g
– Boil eggs and motherwort in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes
– Peel the egg shells and boil the eggs in decoction for 3 more minutes
– Eat eggs and decoction, once a day
– This remedy is used for dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation caused by blood stasis, postnatal bleeding and dysfunctional uterine bleeding

2. Motherwort and Dang Gui (Dong Quai)

– Dang Gui 20g
– Motherwort 30g
– Egg 2 (optional)
– Boil dang gui and motherwort in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes
– Strain out
– Boil the herbs in 2 cups of water for 20 minutes
– Mix the two extracts
– Take the decoction, twice a day
– This remedy is used for menstrual disorders, menstrual pain, endometriosis, anovulation and fallopian tube obstruction

3. Motherwort and cyperus rotundus

– Motherwort 30g
– Cyperus rotundus 9g
– Boil them in water to make a decoction
– Take it twice a day
– This remedy is used for menstrual pain

Please note, according to TCM, women in pregnancy or without blood stasis, or with blood deficiency, should avoid using motherwort.
