Scientists have confirmed that tea has many health properties. Tea is beneficial to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and help weight loss. It is said that Green and black teas have 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and veggies. Tea is rich in polyphenols, which are a type of antioxidant. Both green and black tea block DNA damage associated with tobacco and other toxic chemicals. In animal studies, tea-drinking rats have less cancer.

There is a question about tea: green tea or black tea – which is better? Some people believe that green tea is better than black tea, because green tea contains more catechins (a powerful anti-oxidant) than black tea – these catechins are mostly oxidized into theaflavins and thearubigens during the manufacture of black tea. However, recent studies indicate the compounds contained in black tea – theaflavins and thearubigens have more benefits in reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer.green-tea-black-tea

In a study in Netherlands, scientists looked at 552 men over a 15 year period. Men who drank over four cups of black tea per day had a significantly lower risk of stroke than men who drank only two to three cups per day. They concluded that the flavonoids in black tea helped reduce the production of the “bad” cholesterol (LDL) that can lead to stroke and heart attacks.

Dr. Joseph Vita at Boston’s School of Medicine also found that drinking black tea can help reverse an abnormal functioning of the blood vessels that can contribute to stroke or heart attack.

Regarding the question, green tea or black tea, which is better, in traditional Chinese medicine and food guidelines, there is a different theory. According to the traditional theory, green tea is slightly cooling, while black tea is slightly warming. Also, green tea is slightly moisturizing, while black tea is slightly a little bit drying. Green tea is more effective in clearing heat and cooling body, while black tea is more effective in removing fat and drying up the body.

If your diet contains a lot of dairy products and meats, or you live in a cold area, then the fat-removing and warming black tea is better for you. But if your diet contains more grains and vegetables, or you live in a hot area, then green tea is better for you. This may explain why people who have rice and grains as main food in East Asia drink green tea, while Tibetans and Mongolians who consume milk, butter and meat drink black tea, and Europeans also prefer black tea.

If you are overweight, oily and have internal dampness, then black tea is better for you. But if you are thin, dry or have excessive internal heat, then green tea is better for you.
