Perilla (Zi Su) is used to treat common cold, running nose, headache, chills and vomiting in traditional Chinese medicine.

Perilla (Zi Su, 紫蘇, purple mint, Japanese basil, wild coleus) is, like basil and coleus, a member of the mint family.

Zi Su is a perilla that has purple leaves. Zi Su has anti-inflammatory properties and can stimulate the immune system. It is often combined with ginger to treat common cold in China.

Here is how to make Zi Su Ginger Tea:

– Fresh perilla leaves 60g (or dried leaves 15g)
– Fresh ginger 20g (cut into small pieces)
– Put the ginger in a pot with a cup of water, bring to a boil, and simmer for 5 minutes
– Add perilla, and bring to a boil again, then simmer for 2 more minutes
– Turn off the heat, and add a table spoon of brown sugar
– Drink the decoction, twice a day

Please note, Zi Su (purple perilla) is a warming herb. It warms lungs and stomach, thus can be used to relieve colds and vomiting. You should not use it if you have the conditions of fever, or dry cough.
