The mechanism of how kelp treats cellulite maybe is not as simple as just a fat burner. Let’s see what is the descriptions and guidelines about this herb in traditional medicine texts.

Kombu is a herb in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). According to a TCM text “Ben Cao Jing Shu” (本草经疏, published in 1625), “Kombu is salty, thus it softens and resolves hard masses. It has moisturizing and downwarding properties. It is cooling, therefor it cleanses heat and dissipates stagnation. That is why it treats twelve types of edema, tumour, and adenosis scrofulosa. Li Dong Yuan (李东垣, TCM doctor, 1180-1251) said: the stone-hard goiter cannot be cured without this herb”. For centuries, TCM has used kombu to treat goiter, lymph nodes, tumour, edema, and various types of hard masses and lumps.

So as we can see that, seaweed (kelp, kombu) has long been used for treating goiter, lymph nodes, tumour, hard masses and lumps, thus including cellulite deposits, lumps of fat.
