Butterbur, or Petasites, is an herb found throughout North America, Europe and Asia. As one of herbal remedies used for centuries, Butterbur was used for headache and inflammation.

Today, butterbur is mainly used for prevention/relieve of migraine and other headaches. Studies show it is effective at reducing the frequency of migraines. Scientific studies have reported that Butterbur is effective in reducing the occurrence or severity of migraine headaches. Butterbur contains petasin and isopetasin. Several double-blind studies have shown that extracts of Butterbur petasin and/or isopetasin are effective in preventing and relieving migraine.

Butterbur is available as a herbal supplement under the brand name Petadolex, Tesalin, and Petaforce.

Please note: Some butterbur preparations contain chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which can damage the liver and cause other serious harm. Butterbur extract should be taken only when prepared by a reputable laboratory. Only butterbur products that are certified and labeled “PA-free” should be used.
