Prunus mume (Wu mei) can be used to treat dysentery, blood in stool, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, hematuria, metrorrhagia, cough, vomiting, thirst, insomnia, and intestinal worms.

Prunus Mume (Ume, Wu mei, Dark plum fruit, Green plum, Chinese plum, Japanese apricot) is a species of Asian plum in the family Rosaceae. Prunus mume is a popular fruit and home remedy in East Asia. smoked plums are called “wu mei”, while plums pickled with vinegar and salt are called “suan mei zi” in Chinese. Umeboshi are pickled and dried plums (a Japanese specialty).

No matter what its name is, and no matter what processing method is used, prunus mume has the same medical properties. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), wu mei is a sour and astringent medicine, which affects liver, spleen, lung and large intestine. wu-meiAccording to TCM, a herb that has sour and astringent tastes usually has contractive effects, in other words, it usually has effects to reduce excessive internal heat and asthenic fever. Therefore, it can stop any type of leaking or loss(bleedings, dysentery and sweating, etc), reduce thirst, relieve vomiting and insomnia, if these disorders are caused by the heat and fever.

1. To treat dry cough, acute and chronic pharyngitis

– Hold a wu mei in mouth, twice a day

2. To treat intestinal worms, roundworms and ascariasis

– Wu mei 40g
– Toosendan 40g
– Szechuan Pepper 20g
– Berberine 20g
– Rhubarb 10g
– Make a decoction
– Take it twice a day for 3 days

3. To treat heavy menstrual bleeding and uterine (vaginal) bleeding

– Wu mei (core removed) 15g
– Brown sugar 2 teaspoons
– Water 500ml
– Boil wu mei in water to make a decoction
– Add brown sugar
– Drink half, twice a day

4. To treat thirst and summer heat

– Boil a handful of wu mei to make a decoction, add sugar, and drink it as a tea

5. To treat all other disorders, such as dysentery, blood in stool, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, hematuria, vomiting & insomnia

– Combine wu mei with other herbs, or use wu mei alone to make a decoction, take it twice a day

Please note, wu mei is good for treating disorders caused by excessive internal heat and asthenic fever due to its astringent, contractive and calming properties. If your problem is not caused by the heat or fever, you should not use it. Please consult your doctor before taking a remedy.
