How to know if my headache is kapha headache?

Kapha headache is caused by ama in the form of mucus (usually sinuses), due to accumulation of kapha in head. The patient feels dull aching pain in the region of nose, temple and surrounding area. Therefore it is described as sinus headache. The headache is usually accompanied by nasal congestion or colds with symptoms of hay fever and other allergies.

Kapha headaches often occur in winter and spring, usually strike in the morning and evening, and get worse when you bend over from the waist.

How to treat kapha headache? Here are Six Ayurvedic remedies:

1. Ginger juice for kapha headache

– Apply fresh ginger juice (or dry ginger powder with warm water) to the affected region, this will relive the kapha headache.

2. Vacha old for kapha headache

– Apply a drop of vacha extract oil to each nostril, this will relieve headache of sinusitis.

3. Ginger, cinnamon and cloves tea for kapha headache

– Use 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of cloves powder to make a hot tea, and drink it when it is lukewarm.

4. Cinnamon and ghee paste for kapha headache

– Combine 1 teaspoon of cinnamon with enough ghee to make a paste, and apply to forehead. This will relive the kapha headache.

5. Aromatherapy for kapha headache

– Choosing spicy, warm aromas such as rosemary, tulsi, eucalyptus, lemon, basil, juniper and coriander. Rub a drop of the essential oil onto the area between mouth and nose, and take deep breaths. Also, rub a drop of the essential oil onto the affected region. This will relieve the headaches.

6. Ayurvedic diet for kapha headache

– Eat spicy, pungent, bitter and astringent taste foods with light and warming properties.
– Eat Onion, orange, beef, potato, daikon, broccoli, cauliflower, and beans.
– Choose lighter whole grains. Barley, buckwheat, millet and couscous are good choices for balancing kapha dosha.
– Cooking foods with warming spices is beneficial for balancing kapha. Turmeric, cumin, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, coriander, cayenne, black pepper, asafetida, cloves and fenugreek offer flavor, aroma and healing effects.
